Home Remedies

Lately I've been getting into home remedies and homemade goodies. It's the closest I'll get to willingly cook. I don't know about you, but I would rather try something natural first before I turn to the pharmaceuticals. Since the cold season is upon us, I thought I would pass along some remedies to you. In a little bit, I'll be making lotions, lip balms, and other goodies, so keep an eye out for them! My family will be getting those for Christmas this year because I'm tired of shelling out money; we all are. Actually, we're just going to enjoy a fun time together, but I'm going to surprise them with it since they know I hate to cook.

Burns
Mix equal parts of vinegar and baking soda. Cover over the burn.

Sore Throat
Heat 1 cup water, add 1 tablespoon lemon juice, and 1 and a half tablespoons of honey. Stir and drink.

Sleepless Nights
Mix 1 teaspoon of honey (they also make lavender honey, which works best for this) in lukewarm milk. Drink.

Stomach Ache
Mix 1 teaspoon of honey, half cup hot water, half a lemon juiced, and half teaspoon freshly grated ginger. Ginger is optional. Drink.

Cough Syrup
#1 - Mix one-fourth cup molasses, three-fourth teaspoon vinegar, 1 tablespoon butter. Heat. Drink.
#2 - Mix one-fourth teaspoon cayenne pepper, one-fourth teaspoon ground ginger, 1 tablespoon honey, 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar, 2 tablespoons water. Warm. Drink.

Heartburn
Dissolve half teaspoon baking soda in 1 cup water. Drink. Quickly.

Colds, Indigestion, Cough
Combine 8 ounces pineapple juice, 2 teaspoons honey, one-fourth teaspoon grated fresh ginger over low heat. Drink.

I tend to get coughy and sickish during the winter, so I'm hoping these will hold them off a bit. I hate going to the doctor when I can avoid it.

The Elektra Workout

Okay, embarrassing, nerdy confession here. I love action movies and comic book movies. Love Star Wars. A part of me has wanted to be one of the "heroes." I guess that's another reason why I loved the show Heroes. So sad it was canceled. This love is one of the many reasons why I did karate for years until I started teaching and didn't have the energy to do it. Yes, I even enjoyed the movie Elektra, though it could have been a lot better. I'm a Jennifer Garner fan - loved Alias, too. Can you see an action trend?

I stumbled upon the workout used by Jen for the movie Elektra, which I thought I'd share with you because I'm incorporating it into my workouts. I'm trying to be more of a runner; I sometimes find it boring, so I try to mix up my workouts.

The goal: Lean down Jennifer Garner’s athletic physique into that of a “Ninja-like superhero — silent, quick and graceful,” for her role in “Elektra.”

The workout: Ten-minute warm-up on the treadmill, followed by a “movement-prep” workout, including light stretching, leg swings, lunges and squats, created by trainer Valerie Waters. Jen alternated between a cardio workout and full-body circuit training. The cardio workout typically centered on about 30 minutes of interval training: running hard for two minutes, then one minute of walking, before picking up the pace.

When circuit training, Jen would combine a series of upper body, lower body and ab exercises. For example: a set of chest presses, followed by a set of lat pull-downs, squats and then crunches on a stability ball. She would complete the circuit three times with little rest, then follow with another series of exercises for the same muscles. After three more rotations through the circuit, she did some light stretching and was finished. She worked out 45 to 60 minutes a day, five or six days a week.

The signature move: Reverse lunges with a medicine ball to work legs, glutes and abs. Holding a 4-pound medicine ball in front of her, Jen would take a large step back with her left leg while bringing the ball down to her right hip. After eight repetitions, she would switch to the other side.

The diet: A combination of protein and carbohydrates every three hours, keeping a close eye on portion sizes. Jen’s breakfast typically included an egg-white omelet chock-full of vegetables, with a serving of fruit — ideally blueberries, says Waters. Other breakfast options were high-protein Kashi cereal with soy milk, or oatmeal mixed with protein powder.

Three hours after breakfast she had a mid-morning snack, such as an apple and almonds, or fruit with yogurt. Lunch was a salad with chicken, or a turkey wrap made with a whole wheat tortilla and vegetables. For dinner, she usually had chicken or fish, with more vegetables. She limited her starchy carbs, such as breads and pastas.

What do  you think? Are you going to try it, too?

When the wind changes

So, this weather is weird. It's in the 60s, and it has been pretty much all week. Now, I love this feeling, but not in the middle of February, in the dead of winter. Anyone else feel the same? I'm a seasonist, meaning I like the weather to feel the way its suppose to for that particular time of year. Sure, I've enjoyed a return to skirts, which I'll be posting my outfit when I find my camera, but it's not time for it yet. However, when the weather starts to turn, I start to change, too. How? I'll tell you!

1. I don't want to eat as much. I also start to not want as many heavy foods. My theory is the body puts on more weight in the winter to keep us warm. It has been really cold, so this is how I'm explaining the few pounds I've gained. That and being a newlywed.

2. I start to think tornadoes are going to happen any minute. There's a reason I think this. I live in the only place that has two official tornado seasons. Actually, we really have tornadoes all year round, so after a while, you can tell by the way the wind blows if bad weather is going to happen. I sometimes feel like I'm Bill from Twister: smell it in the dirt.

3. I want to go to the beach...now. I love the beach so much, especially this time of year. End of May is the best time, but try to time it before school gets out. I love the beach life: very laid back with a lot of seafood. Seafood is my favorite. I'll pretty much eat anything that swims to move around.

So, how about you? I'm ready for skirts and sandals again. What do you look forward to when the weather changes?

Riviera Fitness

I'm loving Group Power at Riviera Fitness. I had my doubts and fears, but it's so good! It's a good mix of men and women, and it gives a good challenge without being impossible for those who have never done a weight lifting class. I like to do 30 minutes of cardio first to get warmed up before class. No, it doesn't tire me out. You don't move around a lot in the class; you just lift the weights. You might do some lunges.

Why Do Weight Lifting?
You Will Be Physically Stronger.
You Will Lose Body Fat.
You Will Gain Strength Without Bulk (for women; men gain mass).
You Decrease Your Risk Of Osteoporosis.

I've only been doing it a few weeks, and I can tell a difference. You will love it!
